During the lessons we observe your posture and movement patterns. In addition to visual and verbal directions, I will use my hands, gently placing them on your neck, shoulders, back and so on to guide you to expand and to release restrictive muscular tension.
In lessons we learn how to become freer and how to break down old habits of posture and movement. We aim to become more conscious of the way we use ourselves and learn how to function in a more coordinated free way. We can then apply what is learnt in the session to any activity.
A lesson usually lasts forty-five minutes to an hour. I work with the student in three ways: lying on a table, in everyday movements (i.e, sitting, standing, walking and breathing), and in specific skilled activities (i.e, sitting at the computer, playing a musical instrument, etc).
Learning a new skill and changing habits takes time. The majority of students come for a few months, taking between twenty and forty lessons. To get established in the technique it is best to start with two or three sessions a week, then later this can be reduced to once a week. A lot depends on how far you want to take it.

Alexander lessons are not painful. None of the work involves excessive physical force, and students remain clothed and comfortable during the session.
