Singing and voice

The Alexander Technique is a superb tool for the singer, bringing a kinesthetic understanding of the voice and how to improve it. It shows the student how to become aware of the physical habits that are interfering with the freedom to make a beautiful, unforced sound. It then teaches how to undo these habits and replace them with new positive and useful ones.

Many singers struggle with vocal problems which are the direct result of previous training. Many are misinformed about the way voice and breathing actually work and the way in which they are related to the rest of the body. Using the technique we learn how to breathe, talk or sing without unnecessary interferences and tensions.

Often a chronic technical problem can be solved with the help of the Alexander Technique by bringing the student's attention to an area of the body he or she had never before linked with vocal production, such as hips and lower back. With better overall coordination the voice can become more rich and expressive.

The technique is also useful for singing teachers and voice therapists. By experiencing the body awareness gained from the Alexander Technique, they are better equipped to help their students.

When a singer knows how to use his or her whole body to create proper conditions for vocal production, there follows a security that leads to consistent, healthy singing and gives great pleasure to the singer and the audience.
