The Alexander Technique is about making choices in every aspect of your life, from how you behave to becoming the person you want to be. Many of us may find it difficult to break our habitual responses. We are being driven by the need to get it right, but as long as we are fixed on getting things right, and getting it right now, we make it impossible for ourselves to respond in a new way. We can only have choice when there are real alternatives to choose between.
The division of the mind and body is absolutely false. The Alexander Technique helps you to become conscious of the subtle but critical interactions between the mind and the body. Negative thoughts and emotions are often old patterns or habits, expressed in the body as well as the mind. The Alexander Technique is a powerful strategy that can help us deal with the negative actions in our lives.
The Alexander Technique invites you to take responsibility for yourself, your thoughts, your actions, how you are feeling and to realize that you have the power to help yourself. It invites you to recognize that the state you are in largely determines how you perceive yourself and the world around you. It teaches that you have the power to change your state. The technique encourages you to avoid isolating your posture from your thoughts and feelings, but to learn truly to listen to your body and experience it as an indicator about how you are. Through improving awareness of the body, the self is more able to know itself.
