Aging

With aging, many of us experience loss of balance, flexibility, strength and endurance, taking longer to heal and to adapt to stress, and becoming more stiff, uncoordinated and vulnerable to medical problems. Fear of being injured in a fall ironically makes us tense up more, making us even more unstable.

We are told that age and gravity work against us, grinding us inevitably down. This however, is a misunderstanding of how we are constructed as we are actually ingeniously built with reflexes that use gravity to support us balanced and upright, and project us up into life and activity.

The Alexander Technique addresses the fundamental interferences behind "symptoms" such as stiffness, pain, and fear of falling. By means of a few simple principles and thoughtful movement it develops in students their ability to self-observe and gradually take responsibility for how they choose to move, giving a powerful answer to the challenges of aging.

Restoring poise and balance helps to prevent falls and reduces anxiety. Increasing flexibility at joints and reducing excessive tension lessens the damage when falls do occur. The technique helps regaining and maintaining mobility, improving stamina and lightness, and promoting ease in all activities.

As movement becomes more balanced and less effortful, pressure is taken off joints and organs and mood and well-being is enhanced. Other benefits may include improved breathing and organ function, improved digestion and absorption, lowered blood pressure and improved ability to cope with chronic illness and pain such as arthritis and Parkinson's disease.
